Synaesthesia
Quote by Maria Popova: "All sounds have colour The alphabet has colour Days of the week have colour. Each day has a colour and a certain shape.”
In class we discussed the meaning and effects of Synaesthesia. We learnt that synaesthesia is where you picture sounds in your mind's eye. This helps give the audience additional pleasure.
We also discussed that this is a good way to plan your visuals when making a music video.
We learnt that we could picture the shapes in our head and then draw them out in a abstract way. Also the shapes depend on the instrument or the beats, for example as the beat changes the shape may get larger. We learnt this is a clever approach to start off with when making our own music video.
Here are examples of video's which are edited to the music, making the music and the performance come to life, using the technique of synaethesia to create passionate music video.
Taylor Swift- We are never getting back together.
This music video has smartly been edited to the rhythm of the song, which enables the audience to feel the shapes of the music. The narrative is done in a more super cheesy way, and there are many fast transitions and camera movement. The camera doesn't just move in this music video, but it forms a sense of synaethesia when the people in the frame are jumping up, creating a certain shape and feel for the audience, which is effective. The ending and start are the exact same, making it feel smooth and simple. The edits are almost like a pop-up booklet, there's always a lot going on, and only partial shots of the narrative, and much more rhythmical performance, with the band and main star. Everyone performing have very smiley cheesy expressions, making the performance seem a lot more free. This video has taught me clever ways to edit and move the camera to the music, giving a total sense of synaethesia.
DADA-Feed the dada
The camera movement in this music video is pretty much still all the way through, apart
from when the guy is dancing like he's in a club, then the camera is following his
body as he bounces to the music. The slow motion is really strong with the music at
the start, but as the loud beats come into the music, the main singer is using his body
and this video is all about performance and feeling the music. This gives the music
its own shape and feel to it, because his preformance is strong and passionate, allowing
the audience to really feel the music, the performance, editing and camera all work
together to give the audience a sensation.
Alter Ego-Rocker
This music video is edited very well to the beat. The repetition of shots makes the
performance look more interesting for the audience, and the camera movement
pans and moves to the rhythm of the song. The main thing that stands out in this music
video, as in most, is the significance of the editing, and the pace of the editing is
done professionally and very well, on time with the music. The music video creates
a repetetive image of shapes and feelings in the audiences head. The audience is
able to use their mind to turn the music video into an abstract shape, that repeats.
