Meanings of music video editing- Carol Vernallis style.

In class we went through the article by Carol Vernallis "The kindest cut: functions and meanings of music video editing". As we went through it i highlighted some of the important main elements. I wanted to post them on here, so I can remember most of her important and helpful points about music video.

  • Edits in music video are far from continuity editing. They are fragmented and disjunctive, and the shots are usually edited to the beat and rhythm of the song.
  • Music video editing is more of a responsibility than the editing for Hollywood film editing.
  • Music video's aim is to spark a listeners interest in the song.
  • The oblique quality of a string of imagery can serve to showcase the star.
  • Random shots of the star to promote the star. Music video is like a vehicle to sell the star.
  • Graphic match appears frequently in music video, less in film.
  • Music video can use graphic matches so freely because the genre has reason to draw attention to its materials and production methods.
  • The concentration of imagery in music video has led to an expanded role for the visual principles of graphic match.
  • Narratives in music video's are often fractured and discontinuous.
  • Music videos place movement against movement much more promiscuously, juxtaposing motion within the frame to camera movement, and mixing speeds, directions and durations.
  • A jump-cut, which is generally unacceptable in film, can be avoided by shifting the camera at least thirty degrees between two adjacent shots that contain a change in scale.
  • Music video use a lot of jump-cuts.
  • Music video's don't follow editing rules.
  • Such a shot might appear at any point in a music video as a way of exposing a space otherwise revealed only in fragments or of creating visual contrast.
  •  Low-angle shots are used more extensively in music videos, partly because they reproduce the relations among audience, performer and stage.
  • A video, by contrast, may contain a long series of high-angle or low-angle shots.
  • In music video, there is no clear causality concerning which came first, music, lyrics or image, and at any moment, any one medium an be seen to influence the other.
  • Dollys are often used in music video
  • Tracking and panning are common camera movements in music video.
  • Music video's are mainly presented as a puzzle to work out for the audience.
