In class we looked at some videos that relate to Andrew Goodwin's music videos theory. Underneath I have gave the examples we looked at and a little bit about how they relate to his theory in music video.
Goodwin's key terms:
Illustration: This is where the images on the screen are matching with the narrative and lyrics.
So perhaps there might be a montage illustrating the meaning behind the song.
Amplification: This is where there is additional meanings added to the song.
Disjunction: Where there is a contradiction between the lyrics and visuals.
Boy George
-Do you really want to hurt me
= Amplification, as he is adding
meaning to the song.
Madonna
-Papa don't reach
= Illustration as there is
a pure narrative throughout
.
Public enemy
- 911 is a joke
= Illustration and there is no
beginning or end it's all
mixed up.
Depeche Mode- Never let me down
= Disjunction because the lyrics and
visuals don't match with each other.
Goodwin's Check-list for music video
1.Music video's demonstrate genre characteristics (stage performance in metal video,
dance routine for boy/girl band).
2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals(either illustrative,
amplifying,contradicting)
3. There is a relationship between music and visuals (either illustrative,
amplifying, contradicting)
4.The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of
close-ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur
across their work ( a visual style)
5. There is frequently reference to notion of looking(screens within screens,
telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
6. There is often intertextual reference ( to films,tv programmes, other music
video's etc)
