This is Jack Johnson's Digipak for his album, In between dreams. The obvious theme throughout this album is the colours black and yellow, so that everything matches well and has a distinct look. This Digipak brings most of the attention to the front cover but still makes each panel attracting for the audience. The images throughout the Digipak show how chilled out the album itself is and gives off a mellow feel to it all, linking to the genre of music.
The Front Cover is a silhouette image, of a tree and supposedly Jack Johnson picking leaves off it, it is noticeable as being Jack Johnson because of the guitar that is included in the silhouette image. The image carries on to the back of the Digipak showing that just a simple image can captivate any audience. There is also a special edition sticker on the front of the Digipak suggesting that audiences can have a certain exclusivity.
This 4 Panel album is a better example of a detailed Digipak as Jack Johnson has made sure that each panel has something on it that would appeal to most audiences, the bright colours of course are the main part of attraction.
On the inside of the Digipak, one side is a simple edited photo of Jack Johnson with his guitar in front of his body. He uses this picture to emphasize the guitar because throughout his whole album the guitar is mainly the source of his music. On the other side is a plastic case containing the most important part of the Digipak is the CD with a print of a leaf silhouette on the card panel which is visible through the plastic case.
Finally the back of the Digipak is similar to most Digipak's except the image on the back seems to be of a trunk of a tree, but its actually a continuing image from the front cover which is a tree with branches and leaves. The back of the Digipak includes a list of all the songs that are on the album, including one live song that has been put in especially, hence the use of the special edition sticker. It also includes the necessary bar codes as well as small images of the record company and information about the copyright details.
This digipak has six panels which all add up to the main picture that the artist is trying to create. The dominant colours of this digipak are greys, blacks and red. The greys and black could connote darkness and negativity and the only parts of colour being the red blood. Red, however, connotes pain, lust, love, danger and compassion and all of these feelings may be incorporated in the music featured in this digipak. The images on the digipak could also represent the feeling of the artist or how the artist perceives themselves to be. The blood images feature on the parts where the CD rests this could draw the consumer to the CD because the only bright and dominant colour is red and this could catch their attention.
From the colours used and the clothing used in this digi pak, you can straight away tell the
genre of the album is R&B. The picture on the far right is a low shot of Rhianna looking at the camera, showing her power and sex appeal. There is some sense of voyeurism in this
digi-pak, which is common in R&B female artists. Baggy creamy clothes, and bakini
bras are commonly used in this genre, as it appeals to males. On the left side, you have
a full longshot of the same picture but this time her whole body is showing, and her
legs are barely covered, which also appeals to males. The shot of Rhiannas pose (the long shot)
is quite a sexy position, and Rhianna looks very confident, which seems to appear a lot
in R&B music video. On the left side, at the bottom there are 3 photos of Rhiannas other albums allowing them to be seen and promoted as well. The black and gold really contrasts with the white
clothing that Rhianna is wearing in the photographs. Also, like in any album,a very important part of a digi-pak is the description inside and at the back of the digi-pak. This can tell the buyer anything to the history of the artist, the details of her other albums, or just general information about the artist and this particular album.
The colours portrayed in this album of Beyonces represent wealth and glamor. The gold
gives it the extra famous feel, and glamour. The shot of Beyonce shows her body shape
and figure. She is wearing a tight black outfit with high heels. Her legs are widely spread
and this is all attractive for the male buyer. There are also pictures of Beyonce behind
the CD, where it fits in, so the person who owns the CD can see her when they take
the CD out, and when they put the CD back into the case. Like Rhiannas digi-pak, there
are 3 photos of her other album so they also can become promoted. The black background
on the left hand side really stands out, and is clear to read, as it contrasts completely with
the white writing on top. Also the black background allows the images to be more clear,
and to stand out better. The image of Beyonce is not so innocent, and because her clothes
are so tight, her breasts and thighs are able to show more, which can grab the males
attention to the album.
You can tell by the layout, the colours used and the font used that this digi-pak is a lot less modern.
There aren't many colours used at all, its all pretty dark and bland. This is because technology wasn't as impressive those days. The sepia colour used, shows that they're an old band.
Compared to the other digi-paks the amount of photos in this one is a lot less, showing that technology has been getting better. On the front of this digi-pak there is just one big picture
showing the bands faces, this is nothing too fancy. The artists faces are barely in the frame,
perhaps this shows that photography wasn't as important as it was then as it is now.
There is a lot of writing at the back, with the names of the songs that the CD will play, and
maybe a little bit about the band.
