Album covers Research

For our coursework this year we have to create a music video with our very own made up star, we have to make sure the artist is believable with the song and that we make it clear what sort of image we are giving that artist. We have to make sure that the artist is sell able, and have a successful star image. We will need to create our very own digi-pak which involves many artistic needs. We need to be able to create a believable promotion album that is able to sell our star/band. The look and design we decide to give our album, will affect the way people see this particular artist. So here are some album covers from all different kinds of artists and different genres. As you can see each album has their own original design to appeal to their particular independent target audience. The style of the album cover depends on the genre of the music, and the artist. For example Rihanna's always seem to have quite a strong, attractive portrait of her on the front of the album, which is usually very colorful, showing off her star image, making her stand out and to help promote her. However the Three days grace one is more about selling their band name by giving them a creative sign, and design to promote their band. I have found researching into different album designs has made me a little more aware of the different genres and their approaches to designing. Hopefully my album cover that I will produce, will be able to sell my ideal band/artist, and give them a good star image.

Something album covers all have in common is that they will always have the name of the artist/band & album on either the top in the middle, or just somewhere visible. They also usually have a extreme-close up, close-up, maybe a mid or long shot of the artist itself but with some sort of fancy edit, related to the genre of that particular artist/band. The Flo Rida one above this paragraph looks very R&B, especially the font at the top of the album cover. Another reason why you can tell this album is an R&B one, is because of the mise-en-scene Flo Rida is wearing. For example, the black glasses, the vest, the jeans and the chain and watch.

The Rihanna album cover at the top of this post is a entire shot of her face close-up. She's looking sophisticated for her Disturbia album. The picture is very glamorous, showing of Rihanna's features very well, making the album more attractive and view able.
