Vernallis Analysis
The theorist Carol Vernallis is known for her theory based on music editing. I will be viewing her theory and applying it to actual music videos. Carol Vernallis theory is based around 4 key concepts that all relate to the way a music video is manufactured, these concepts are:
Narrative
Editing
Camera Movement and Framing
Diegesis
Carol Vernallis when describing her theory particularly the narrative aspect, suggests that the video is a visual response to the narrative. Therefore whatever is happening onscreen reflects the choice of lyrics that the artist is singing. However Vernallis then goes on to say how the narrative may not always be completed and can be partial with the video appearing disjointed, disconnected and appear in fragments. The video has something driving it forward but this may not necessarily be the narrative, it could be the music itself or other elements in the video. However if the video is left uncompleted it can lead to many questions about the narrative that won't always be answered throughout the video. Finally although the video may have a theme or narrative, it is probably displayed in a montage style, rather than in one clear focus.
Carol Vernallis states that a clear convention of music editing is that the video may disrupt or break the conventions of continuity editing. The editing may also be bought to the foreground, become visible and not hidden apposed to the invisible style of continuity editing. Meaning the video will have a style of editing running throughout that is distinctive to that video. For example you may see:
Jump Cuts
Breaks of the 30’ Degree Rule
Cutting with the lyrics
Extreme changes in pace
Juxtaposed Frames
Graphic Matches
Carol Vernallis states that establishing shots are one of the key camera features of a music video and are used frequently throughout a music video as well as close up shots. The style of framing of the video again is quite distinctive to the video and also the camera may move in time with the lyrics. Extreme shots also known as master shots are also very common.
In terms of media the diegesis is the world of the music video. Carol Vernallis explains how the diegesis will be revealed quite slowly. The actions in the video won't always be completed and may be disrupted in some way. There will be many repetitions throughout the video and some frames will appear more important than others due to the way they have been shot/framed.

Inspiration
I really like the lighting in this music video. The lighting is quite exciting, and it
builds an interesting atmosphere. For example the greenish lighting at the start
of the music video. This seems like a colour correction effect has been used, for
some reason I really do like the look of this. For my music video I hope to use
colour correction, as it's more exciting, and unique.
Also another thing that inspired me is the flashing effect used throughout the video.
This makes the music video a little more entertaining.
This music video has a lot of edits, effects and colour correction. For my music
video I hope to think about using some of these things.
Another interesting thing I like about this video is definitely the performance shots.
Marilyn Manson has a really powerful performance, as he is over confident, and
he doesn't care about what other people think. In my music video I hope to give
the same sort of image for my male artist. I hope to make him very confident
in what he does, and I want him to look proud of himself, rather than ashamed.
Inspiration
I really like the mise-en-scene used in this music video. The band have really unique
outfits and make up on. Their star persona is unusual, but I find it fun and I really love
the main singers hair. The band look really colourful and cool.
Another thing I like about this music video, is that it is made in a really emo style.
The bands star image is really emo like, and the people in the band have really
fancy hair. For example at 1:02 the guy has really long black hair, with bright
red highlights.
I have been inspired by the bands star image in this music video. For my artist
I hope to make him have a similar style to the guy with the black/red hair.

Record label research
Major Records is an independent record label. They only distribute Electronic music videos. They originate from Germany, and IAMX is one of their most popular artists. The other artists who are popular with this record label are Boytronic and Ladytron. The label was found in 2004.
Metropolis also work with electronic music videos but they also work with the rock genre as well.
This record label began in 1995. It is the dominant record label in North America for the Electro-industry.
Digi-pak Analysis 1
I really like this Rihanna album. I like how the front cover is an extreme close-up of her face and facial expression. There's a lot of red used in this digipak which is a colour Rihanna suits.
Also the front of this digipak suits Rihanna's perona with voyeurism. The image shows lust and love, because there is so much red used. The roses and petals used in the digipak are fragile and go with the theme of the digipak. The glow going through the album cover makes Rihanna's lips stand out more. She looks really attractive in this digipak, and the front cover is what will attract people to buying it first.
What do I want on my website?

Website pages choice!
The reason why I chose these pages is because I think they're important. I added merch and competition next to each other to keep the viewer entertained and feeling involved.
The gallery is closer to the front of the website. I think it is important as most people seem
to like the gallery pages these days, so I will be sure to add lots of cool and ineresting photo's of
our main singer!
The lyrics and my ideas
Here
are the lyrics for the music video that we are working on. The lyrics
are relating to a girl that gets everything her way. It also talks in
a sexual way saying "Oh give me some attention, I was made for
you and built to please you". We know this song is relating to a
sexual pleasurable way within the lyrics. Here you can see that we
have taken into account the feelings and emotions that the lyrics
send out to the audience and what image the lyrics have put into our
groups thoughts. We've also included some ideas of the meaning of the
lyrics and how it could relate to the singing/artist of the song. Our
group think that the artist is talking about a girl that he has met
and has a relationship with her but it isn't seen as normal. We think
this because of the unusual lyrics that have been included into the
song but the song also includes lyrics that are involved in normal
relationship like kissing and poetry (desribing someone that you love
can be a form of poetry - or someone that you're very close to, you
tend to make up lovely descriptions of).
She's open, she's wild life
Caressing the pride life
Religious, pleasure to pain
The kiss, the kill, the poetry, the freak way
The kiss, the kill, the poetry, the freak way
The Kiss, the kill and never felt better
Pretty little angel
Can we play your game?
I will be gentle
I will move to your pace
Show me the reaction
Come home with me
Oh give me some attention
I was made for you and built to please
Show me the reaction
The poetry, the freak way
Show me the reaction
I'd never felt better
She wants one for nothing
To keep it reacting
Control then for ever
She was and never felt better
She's open, she's wild life
Caressing the pride life
Religious, pleasure to pain
The kiss, the kill, the poetry, the freak way
Pretty little angel
Can we play your game?
I will be gentle
I will move to your pace
Show me the reaction
Come home with me
Oh give me some attention
I was made for you and built to please
I can't forget you
You are the devïl
You are the endless foreplay
The
lyrics are repeated and we have described what we think about the
lyrics of the music video. The lyrics that are in bold are the the
lyrics that our group have describe and included our thoughts on, the
lyrics in italic are the lyrics that have been repeated in the song.
She
wants one for nothing
To keep it reacting
Control then for ever
She was and never felt better
To keep it reacting
Control then for ever
She was and never felt better
In
the first few lines of the lyrics, it's talking about a female and
how she want's something for nothing but to keep it reacting. This
could be something that the male artist is talking about, maybe the
girl wants something from the guy to keep the relationship
"reacting". It then talks about controling forever. Perhaps
this is the girl controlling the guy but the guy has to put up with
the female controlling him because he can't get enough of her and
doesn't want to loose her. It then talks about the girl had never
felt better - this can relate to the "one for nothing" part
of the song - she might have got what she wants from the guy and has
never felt better after recieveing it.
She's open, she's wild life
Caressing the pride life
Religious, pleasure to pain
The kiss, the kill, the poetry, the freak way
The kiss, the kill, the poetry, the freak way
The Kiss, the kill and never felt better
In
the second verse of the song, it talks about how the female is "open"
and "wild life". This can relate to the personality of the
girl of what the guy is singing about. He might be talking about the
womans feelings and personalitiy and he says "religious" -
she may be a religious woman but she has "pleasure to pain"
- this can relate to the last verse of the song where it says "you
are the devil". Maybe the girl is religious but in an evil way -
maybe she has her own religion and ways of doing things. It's like
the guy is singing about her like she's the god of her own religion
and way of living as she controls this guy but he enjoys his role of
being controlled. Also during this verse, it says "the kiss, the
kill, the poetry, the freak way" - this can relate to the
relationship between the guy and the girl he's singing about -
kissing is part of a relationship/interation with another person but
the guy describes "the freak way" - maybe this is because
their relationship is unusual and isn't seen as the norm in society
but will be seen as freakish as the guy enjoys the things that this
girl does to him.
She
wants one for nothing
To keep it reacting
Control then for ever
She was and never felt better
To keep it reacting
Control then for ever
She was and never felt better
Pretty little angel
Can we play your game?
I will be gentle
I will move to your pace
Show me the reaction
Come home with me
Oh give me some attention
I was made for you and built to please
Here
is when the chorus starts and is introduced into the song. The lyrics
"pretty little angel" can relate to how perfect for the guy
this girl he is singing about is for him. It's like the guy respects
everything that she does but knows that it isn't normal to everyone
else. The lyrics "can we play your game?" shows that the
guy wants to do what the girl does but back at her as he says that he
"will be gentle" and "move to her pace". Also
within this verse, the guy is asking for a reaction like the girl
hasn't been treated how she treats others - he asks her to come home
with him and to give him some attention like he's always giving her -
but he's isn't forgetting she's like an "angel" to him, a
god like figure as he says "I was made for you and built to
please" - when the guy says this,
Show me the reaction
The poetry, the freak way
Show me the reaction
I'd never felt better
As
the song progresses, the lyrics on this verse are similar but are
sung in a very low tone and are very quiet and almost whispering. He
says "I'd never felt better" talking as it's the past now
compared to the first verse when he's talking in the present. It's as
if she's moved onto another person and commiting her evil to other
guys.
She wants one for nothing
To keep it reacting
Control then for ever
She was and never felt better
She's open, she's wild life
Caressing the pride life
Religious, pleasure to pain
The kiss, the kill, the poetry, the freak way
Pretty little angel
Can we play your game?
I will be gentle
I will move to your pace
Show me the reaction
Come home with me
Oh give me some attention
I was made for you and built to please
I can't forget you
You are the devïl
You are the endless foreplay
The
lyrics in the last verse talk about how the guy can't forget about
the girl as if he's split away from her or either he's still with her
and will never forget her because she's so different from others that
he has met, that she is unique to him. He describes the girl as the
"devil" - this could maybe relate to the girls personality
and how the guy is describing how evil she is with what she does with
him. He also describes the girl as "endless
foreplay" - this can relate to their sexual contact with each
other.
Needs
to be completed - look for videos that are the same genre of the song
and then find ideas that can help with the music video production.

Promotion methods
There are many promotion methods for artists and bands. The less independent companies, such as Universal use posters and billboards. However, independent companies often use blogs or things like websites for example Youtube. I know this for sure because, even people who have no intention of becoming famous, they still can get noticed. For example Christina Grimmie on Youtube. She got found and become a famous singer.
Youtube has changed many peoples lives, and has made sure great talent doesn't go to waste.
Thanks to sites like Youtube, people who deserve a chance actually have a chance.
Also, because of online sites such as Facebook & Twitter, a lot of socializing can happen
and people can stay in contact etc.
Here is a link to her channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/zeldaxlove64?feature=watch
If a artist/band have their own website it is a great way for promoting music. This is because it's their
own identity, having your own website allows you to be able to upload as much as you want about yourself, for example a biography or a fact-file or more. Websites increase the number of fans, making it a lot more likely that the artists/bands music is going to be promoted. Having a website is a very good marketing technique, almost every artist or band has one. They are a very good way of increasing popularity.
A lot of websites are dedicated to promoting artists, for example blogs, or streaming, forums etc. Some artists use social networking platforms, as they wider the audience. The number of fans can easily go up thousands, just by a social network platform. This is because you can update your fans about upcoming events, gigs, tours, concerts, and so on.
Promoting online isn't the only way to promote your music. There are also many promoting methods not involving the internet. For example a demo CD, or by targeting the television to promote. You can also show documents to other agencies, and find ways for people to see your progress, and who knows if they like it then maybe they will put some of your stuff on television. Most artists/bands promote through music tv channels, for example "One Direction", they are a new band and already are very popular, and their music videos are always on the music channels. Music video channels allow music videos to become more recognized.
