Jakob Nielsen has ten rules to making a website. Here they are:
."Visibility of system status"- The system should always keep users informed about
what is going on, through appropriate feedback with reasonable time.
."Match between the system and real world"- Follow real world conventions and make information appear in a natural logical order.
."User control and freedom"-Users often make a mistake and will need a "emergency exit" with having to go through undo or redo.
."Consistency and standards"-Users should not have to wonder whether different words ,situations or actions mean the same thing. Follow platform conventions.
."Error prevention"-Make a careful design that prevents something bad happening in the first place. Present them with a confirmation option before they commit to the action.
."Recognition rather than recall"- Instructions for use of the system should be easy at all times. Miminize the users memory load by making objects, actions and options visible.
."Flexibility and efficiency of use"-Allow users to taylor frequent actions.
."Aesthetic and minimalist design"- Dialogues must not contain information that is rarely needed.
."Help users recognize, diagnose, and recover from errors"-Error messages should be expressed in plain language (no codes), precisely indicate the problem, and constructively suggest a solution.
."Help and documentation"-It may be necessary to provide help and documentation. Any such information should be easy to search, list concrete steps to be carried out,but not large.
