More about Goodwin's theory

Andrew Goodwin's Theory

Goodwin identifies specific elements of a music video and notes how they must be featured within a text. Aspects of a music video must contain the following :

1. Genre characteristsics, such as dance routines for teenage boy bands.

2.A relationship between lyrics and visual. This can either illustrate, amplify or contradict.

3.Lots of close-ups of artist.

4.Voyeuristic features, such as the notion of looking, like shots of females.

5. Intertextuality. Reference from another text.

Beyonce is a solo artist and this music video follows all the rules of Goodwin's theory.
For example:

2.A relationship between lyrics and visual. This can either illustrate, amplify or contradict.

3.Lots of close-ups of artist.

4.Voyeuristic features, such as the notion of looking, like shots of females.

For example. This last pictures is a fragmented shot of Beyonce's body. This is a voyeuristic feature, and there are many more shots like this. The pictures above however, go with the idea of close-ups. During this music video there are many close-ups of Beyonce's face. Another reason why this relates to the theory, is because the visuals illustrate the lyrics. This is because the music video is almost telling the story of the lyrics.

The shots are to sell her as an artist, for her record label. Beyonce is presenting a story that is parallel with the lyrics.Beyonce is a solo artist and belongs to a genre. Just like many other artists like Rhianna. Goodwin's theory is presented by this music video.
